How the Cut Works at The Open
The cut at The Open Championship determines which players advance to the third and fourth rounds. After 36 holes, the field is typically cut to the lowest 70 scores, including all players tied for 70th place. This means at least 144 players remain, and if more than 70 are tied on 70th place, the field can expand slightly. Players making the cut are guaranteed a weekend start; those who miss it finish in 71st place or beyond for prize money purposes, subject to official adjustments for weather or pace of play.
